Real life, but mostly videogames

I literally just spent the entire day playing FF13-2.  I haven't had that kind of glorious gaming binge in years.  And I'm still only maybe 30% of the way through!  Although I am perilously close to maxing out all the skills in the Crystarium, which might be why battles have been way too easy recently.

I get all weepy and fangirly over Hope every time he is so much as mentioned.  I just want to say -  everyone else in the cast of FF13 , you are all horrible, horrible friends.  (But I guess it doesn't matter because Hope is badass enough to practically single-handedly change the course of history whenever Serah tells him to.  Sure, Serah and Noel deserve some credit, but really, who is doing the hard yards there?)

Also, that Caius wears purple and shared Kain's voice actor is doing weird things to my brain.  He's the best damn villain FF has seen since Sephiroth, though, and has the music to prove it.

I have been doing things other than just drowning myself in Final Fantasy, of course!  I've also been playing  Virtue's Last Reward , and  that game is off the hook awesome .  It's basically a novel game version of the prisoner's dilemma combined with the room escape genre!  It has Liar Game vibes, and conspiracy, and betrayal, and a dude in a robot suit with amnesia, and a psycho AI killer rabbit, and and and I actually shouldn't really say anything more than that lest I spoil it for people.  I'm actually only fairly early in myself though, since, you know, Final Fantasy.  And as a bonus, all Japanese voices!  Just as well, I hate to imagine what localisation would have done with Zero-III.

In other non-video game news, I've been watching a lot of movies - specifically  Wreck It Ralph, Rise of the Guardians, The Hobbit,  and  Les Miserables which were all excellent movies in their own right and I recommend them to everyone.  Have to try and cram in  Life of Pi  sometime over the next week or two as well, though I still struggle to comprehend how that book can make the jump to the screen.  I hope they don't spend the first third of the movie on his childhood spirituality like they did in the book, also.

I've been working on cosplay things for an upcoming convention, and am horribly behind schedule because Final Fantasy.  I will probably make a separate progress post on that in a few days.  Also friends from overseas have been popping up like mushrooms and I've been more social in the past month than I sometimes manage in an entire year. It is frankly exhausting!

It has involved some trips to the arcade though, where I discovered that this is a real thing and it is glorious:

Also a visit to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, which has improved  vastly  since my last trip there some five years ago (just after it opened.)  Now it's actually pretty cool!  I have long forgotten anything I used to know about non-commercial art, but my general barometer of 'is it any good' is linked more less directly to 'how much effort must that have taken to make', and I was pleased.

This slightly blurry photo cannot do justice to the incredible detail and sparkiliness of this massive piece.  There was a set of three murals (surprisingly violent) and they were all incredible.

This was literall thousands f tiny blown-glass figurines of animals arranged in migratory pattern.

2012-12-09 15.24.30

This piece reminded me of the Magical Kingdom of Zeal from Chrono Trigger, but I don't really know why because it's nothing like that at all.

2012-12-09 15.32.55

This piece was just nuts because viewing it from the doorway it looked like a 2D painting on the wall.  It wasn't until you approached it that you realised it was actually a physical object!

This is the big expensive million-dollar statue GoMA got for their fifth birthday.  Not pictured is the tiny water rat on the other side giving the sideways elephant stink-eye. A million dollars sounds like a lot, but I'd say it's money well-spent compared to  Perth' million-dollar sculpture.  Plus the kids love climbing on it, it was actually impossible to get a shot without some kid climbing all over it.

Went up to Mt Coot-tha for the first time since my brother's wedding too, also went on a rather boring hike around the 'mountain' trails that was one of the more boring hikes I've been on in my life.  The view of the city from the lookout was great, though.

Also found a cool new Japanese restaurant in the ritzy part of the Valley, too. It was on the pricier side, but good food in Brisbane often is.  Their mini-okonomiyaki was to  die  for, though.

2012-12-30 18.48.29

One thing Brisbane does have going for it in the food department is that there are a lot of very, very good Japanese restaurants. When someone decides that we want to eat Japanese for lunch or dinner or whatever, it's really difficult to choose which one to go to!

Christmas also happened somewhere in the middle of all that.  My folks wound up staying at my place since my flatmate was out of town visiting her family and since it's a small town of course my folks knew about it and could lean on me to provide accommodation.  The fun part though was that my mother didn't start her Christmas shopping until about three days before Christmas, and since they spoil the grandkids rotten, she was wrapping presents for most of Christmas Eve.  I felt sorry for my nephew-in-law, though, since he got a truly awful and boring present from them (a water bottle and lunch box).  I sought to soothe his disappointment by wrapping his present in such a way that it pre-disappointed him.  Surely a lunchbox is an awesome consolation prize for a seventeen-year-old boy after thinking you're getting a giant toy duck?

It is also  tennis season  right now, and so exciting!  I will no doubt be posting on that soon too.  January used to be an awful month of the year for me, but it has become so jam-packed in recent years!  Seriously, life needs to slow down a little!

P.S. Anyone else getting weird problems with italics in LJ? Formatting seems to be eating random letters. :( Argh, back to editing in HTML again.

Everything you said seems like so much fun!

RE: LiveJournal Problems: apparently they've had more attacks on their servers, so they've been tinkering and locking down some stuff.

You are not the first person I've seen who has had trouble posting. Posting entries, comments, logging in, etc. has been very hit and miss these last two weeks.

Yeah, I was aware that access has been a little dodgy (although I've been fairly lucky for the most part, maybe an advantageous time zone). It seems more something in the real text editor has changed though, messes up the HTML. :/ Which is annoying because I prefer to use that than be buried in my elbows up to html. Oh well! Guess I'll just try to avoid italics for a while.

It's been a while since I tried, so I don't remember if this would work out, but maybe you could write the entire post in the text editor, and then switch to html view to check if the links are all right before posting?

I liked Hope a lot better in 13-2 than in the original, though that could be b/c I never finished the first one, and he was still kind of a whiny brat where I left off lol But OMG, Cais' voice actor XD He also plays Illidan in World of Warcraft (which owns my soul), and I absolutely adore his voice. And is it weird that 13 and 13-2 are the only fandoms that I actually like hetero pairings these days and mourn b/c I can barely find any good Snow/Serah? T_T

Those were gorgeous pictures! Well, the ones that would load are XD Apparently LJ is having problems tonight. But man, I wish we had anything that interesting around here~

I liked Hope in the original too, although I could see where people were coming from. He had a pretty interesting angle with the whole revenge thing, considering his situation it was probably the most productive way to channel his grief at seeing his mother die right in front of his eyes. He was probably the character that grew the most too. Either way, he seems to have done incredibly well for himself in the future. He's a super-genius! I guess he did have a knack for fixing ancient Pulsian robots back in 13...

I know what you mean, FF13 and 13-2 is one of those weird fandoms where I could ship just about anyone with anyone. I'm surprised to hear there's not much Snow/Serah though! I guess maybe I just see them mostly being background couple in the fics I've read than being the focus. I haven't really been reading in the fandom since 13-2 was announced so I have no idea what's happening with it.

Thanks! And you might! You probably just need to look at your home through tourist glasses. :)

Ooh, I just got Virtue's Last Reward, but haven't gotten stuck into it just yet. NA got localised voices, and I've heard it's very good. I believe Zero III is voiced by the same person who did Akihiko if I remember correctly, hah! Have you played the first game, 9 Hours, 9 Persons, 9 Doors?

I saw the Life of Pi the other day. Since I don't want to spoil you, I came out of it thinking that I should have watched it in 3D; it has some phenomenal scenery porn that I think would have been even more breathtaking to see in 3D.

Those photos from the art gallery look spectacular, though, and I wish I could see them in person! SOB THAT LORD FORREST SCULPTURE IN PERTH, THOUGH. The saddest thing is that when I saw it last (about a month+ ago), there's bird poop on it and I think the paint was wearing out in some places now.

I haven't played the first game! I didn't even know it existed until I picked up this one. I'll have to add it to my list. Between this one and FF13-2 though I think gaming-wise I'm going to be busy for quite a while.

It is actually impossible to spoil me for Life of Pi since I've read the book? Cheers for the tip on the 3D, but I'll probably stick to 2D because 3D still tends to give me headaches. :(

Ahahaha, awesome. I can't even figure out what the cactus is made of. Some kind of plastic? Didn't look like it could hold up long-term against the elements. Brisbane thanks you, as we learn from your mistakes! :D

Yeah, I think the main reason VLR was made was because 999 ended up getting much more well known than they expected! You'll have to import 999 though; it didn't get brought to PAL. So I'm glad they brought VLR to PAL. Clover is actually from 999 as well, though she's younger in that game. Oh no now you're making me want to start VLR now, when I'm just about to start FF4 the after years D:

Ah, I meant more in the sense, I don't really give preconceptions of the movie, since I generally think it's best to go into movies (and, well, pretty much most forms of entertainment) without hearing hype/criticisms. I enjoyed it, though!

I never actually went up and touched it, but it does look like plastic, at least |||OTL

Virtue's Last Reward is an amazing game! You can get through the game without having played 9 Hours., 9 Persons, and 9 Doors and still have it be ana amazing experience. Having played the first game in the series though will give much more importance to several characters, will make some events more clear, and will allow you to understand some call back jokes.

Just a note, once you beaten all the paths, keep checking the paths for more ?'s as the game never told me I had a new path for the last couple of scenes. I hope you enjoy it!

It looks like I'll have to import 999 especially though - doesn't look like it got a PAL release. Probably how I missed it! Good to know, though. And thanks for the tip!

I seriously wonder what your reaction to XIII-2's canon ending is going to be! While I haven't played the games (and probably won't, just because I don't particularly want to, not because I hate XIII), I read about the ending and the fact that not only did it piss off the American fanbase, it riled up the Japanese fanbase too!

Though I hope I'm not spoiling by saying that... I'm just legitimately curious. o.o

No idea! Should be interesting. Guess we'll find out if I post a big rant in a couple of weeks? It's hard to think of an ending that would actually upset me for this game.

I think all the people that complained about it are crazy. It was lovely, and its not the end of the series so I don't know why they had their panties in twist.

I'm just really curious, since I know some diehard FF fans (and diehard FFXIII fans) who got quite upset with the ending. X3

Also this is completely irrelevant but I know back when How to Train Your Dragon came out, I think you mentioned how all the Dreamworks Pixar-esque films had that same face? I dunno if you watch/have ever heard of Regular Show, but I saw this:

And I thought of you.

LOL, brilliant!

I wonder how long until Dreamworks just goes ahead and trademarks the expression.
