Wai-Con 2013

It was Wai-Con on the weekend!  Some of you may recall my cosplay freakouts from the leadup.

Not much sleep was had the night before flying over to Perth!  Sleeping is for the plane.  Once I landed, though, it was pretty much non-stop!  We had cosplay skit rehearsals to do, plus shopping and eating and meeting so many new people!  Not to mention all the last-minute cosplay making and trips to Spotlight!

I'll skip all of that, and go straight to what people really care about - the con!

Wai-Con is still the best con.  Having been to all of them now (barring the new Comic Con and upcoming Aus PAX) I feel comfortable in making this pronouncement. I would probably go to every Wai-Con if it weren't on the opposite side of the country.  I mean, they hold their comps and everything in a proper theatre, with LIGHTS and smoke machines and stuff.

Saturday was cosplay day!

The cosplay was a bit of a mixed bag!  I ran out of fabric glue, which was the vital component I needed to keep my thigh armour up!  In the end, I had to concede defeat and ditch the thigh armour, since neither staples nor bobby pins would keep them in place.  :(  There were a bunch of other small problems with the costume, but that was the big one that disappointed me.  I am never ever working with vinyl again.  :|  It is a miserable material which I am not nearly pro enough to be dealing with.  Also my headband and wig kept migrating up my forehead, which didn't make any sense given how much stuff was weighing it down at the front.  Cosplay logic - the parts of your costume you are least worried about will be the very parts that will fail in weird and unexpected ways.  Here's a pic:

(Click on the pic to see the photographer's other pics, which are all fantastic.)

That said, even though the cosplay itself was a bit of a failure, I think the group and con overall were a massive success!  I found it strangely difficult to care about my cosplay woes or lack of sleep or previous stress in light of how awesome absolutely everything else (and everyone else!) was.

I mean, check out the group!  Check out how epic everyone is.

(Photo courtesy of a photographer we hijacked, RedScarf, link on the pic)

I like this pic mostly because I'm lurking evilly in the grass waiting to create a random encounter.

Here's another group pic from the comp:

There were so many of us.

It was my first time competing in the cosplay comp in any capacity, and certainly my first time in a skit!  Somehow we were in the Advanced section, mostly because we wanted five minutes instead of two, but privately that freaked me the hell out because skit n00b over here!

Someone recorded most of it, lucky us! It's hard to see everything, but this will suffice until the official vid is out.

I was a bit fail there too (hard to move arms!) but the actual stage part wasn't so scary!  I was helped along by the comforting knowledge that if I screwed up horribly I could go back to the other side of the country and never see any of those people ever again.  Effectively being half-blind without glasses and in disguise helped too.  This said, this was the first time ever a complete stranger recognised me out of costume the next day. What I get for not wearing a mask.

Anyhow, good news - we won!  (Though we were possibly the only competitors in our section *cough*)  Either way, we got a shiny medal to go with it!

2013-02-04 22.37.03

...That should be rotated.  Am I lazy enough to leave the pic as is?  ...Yes, yes I am.  Anyway snazzy.  Also a memento of some great memories~

Most of Saturday was taken up with cosplay-related things, so I didn't actually get to see much of the con!  We were late, and then had to go register, then it was more or less time for marshalling and pre-judging, then it was the comp itself, and after that people were wilting (myself included - my ice vest worked fabulously for four hours, and died on me only half an hour before we had to go on stage, which was *just long enough*), so we did photos, then it was time for the day's awards ceremony, then after that it The Dark Room Live, which was so epic it ended in crowd surf which got the comedian banned from the venue.

That said, here are a couple of the pics I managed to snag on Saturday:

2013-02-02 11.05.27-1

Gurren Lagaan.  The actual Lagaan.

agentlerain was our brilliant Yuel!  Could die on cue.

Our Vanille!  Complete with appropriate Australian accent.

Our epic Alyssa!

Chocolina, guys!  We had a Chocolina!

Our Hope!  Who we all know is the real main character of FF13-2, even though he isn't playable.  People think it's a metaphor when Lightning says 'Keep hope alive' but I'm pretty sure she means actually keep Hope alive

Our Fang!  That's her actual hair, styled to match Fang's.  It looked fabulous!  I got some of her help styling my wig as well, which I think totally messed up trying to tie feathers and beads to it, lol.

Soi Fon!  I cannot bring myself to tell you how cheaply she made this costume.  It's so incredibly unfair!  XD  Mad skills.

Aigis from P3!  This picture doesn't show it, but she even had the impossible shoes.  It was nuts. She won best Female in the Advanced Category on the Saturday, most deservedly!

Magic Knight Rayearth!  This costume was part of a group, but I sadly only managed to snag the one backstage in marshalling.  They were fantastic costumes though, and won best group in the Advanced Category.  Their capes and swords and headdresses were all so epic!

I actually managed to lose my camera on the Saturday (obviously I got it back, because people are awesome and handed it into the cloak room (after having an undoubtedly amusing look-see at what was on there)), which meant I was stuck with my camera phone for Sunday and had to throw out a criminal number of photos due to blurriness.  :(  I was particularly sad about losing the epic One Piece group photos, but I'm sure there are plenty of them on the internet.  In any case, I went in civvies on Sunday, which was great mostly because I was A. Not a portable sauna and B. Could do things!  Like visit the trader's hall to buy swag and meet people and take photos and attend panels and stuff.

2013-02-03 11.33.40

One such event was Choir Sakura!  They're a group of elderly Japanese (mostly women) who performed anime-related songs!  They're a little unpolished and definitely amateur, but absolutely charming and I could listen to them for hours.  They did a great selection of Ghibli pieces, but the exciting standouts for me were the Gatchaman theme and the Space Battleship Yamato medley.

The cosplay comp was also something special!  They had a Princess Tutu who actually did a ballet routine en pointe for her skit.  With pirouettes and everything!  It was mind-blowing.

2013-02-03 13.32.01

2013-02-03 13.55.30

Epic Fairy Tail group!  Heh, these were actually part of our group from Saturday, and five of us were up late the night after frantically glueing together/tarnishing Erza's armour.

2013-02-03 15.22.48-1

Here's another version of Erza and Mira Jane, sans the epic wings.

2013-02-03 12.20.33

And can't leave out the fourth member of their group!  (Our Hope from the Saturday).

2013-02-03 14.43.38

These guys also had a fabulous skit and it was only unlucky that they didn't win!  LOL Ghirarim.

There was also, I kid you not, an on stage proposal.

2013-02-03 14.59.38

Genuinely.  Guy got down on one knee and the entire auditorium freaked the hell out (in a good way).

Luckily she said yes!  Happy ending!  (Happier than Black Cat, that's for sure.)

This is chronologically messed up, but here're the last couple:

2013-02-03 11.21.21

BlazBlue!  My favourite characters, incidentally.

And one more for good luck...

2013-02-03 15.24.21

Epic Sky High!  All hail the King of Heroes!

And this is super-blurry, but there was another FF13-2 group on the Sunday!

2013-02-03 15.02.11

They won best group in Advanced!  But it was really no surprise, they are all quite pro!

But the con didn't even end there.

Since I couldn't bring my sword back with me, agentlerain suggested I donate it to Wai-Con's auction held just before the closing on Sunday.  Since it was either that or the skip bin, I reluctantly agreed, pretty sure it wouldn't get much and kind of dreading it!  The sword was so incredibly last-minute after all!

Little did I know.

They brought it out with the Smash Brothers' group's Mr Game and Watch (which was in itself pretty damn awesome) and auctioned them as a combo.  Want to guess what they went for?

Insane!  I can't speak for Mr Game and Watch, but the sword wouldn't have taken more than $20 to make!  I almost feel bad about it anyway, because seriously, the sword looks a lot better from a distance, when you don't realise the whole thing is foam and cardboard and held together with hot glue!  I can't help but feel that I am party to someone's incredible disappointment.  XD

Although really, considering a box of five pocky and three ramune sold for $270, maybe I'm overthinking it.  Wai-Con's auction is insane. (Although they did go for more than the Lolita dress and shoes combo, lol.  And the giant billboard too, for that matter. I repeat: insane.)

In short, Wai-Con is kind of crazy awesome, and this time was just as awesome as the last time, and I'm already missing everyone there terribly.  I would normally thank everybody here and flail about all the cool people I met, but I don't think any of them are really on LJ anymore (and several of them never have been) so I've left that to other avenues.

TL;DR Individual cosplay was a bit fail, but Wai-Con was an epic success!

One last thing - I am still horribly sleep-deprived from the weekend, so I'm sorry but there's no chance the next chapter of Beloved will be out this Saturday. (I'm sure most of you already anticipated this though, yes?)  At this point I'm tempted to throw any sort of schedule out of the window, seriously, but I'll let you guys know how it goes.

CNY is once again early this year so I've been forced to stay at home and work my ass off cleaning up ;;

One day I'll make it a point to come to a Waicon (and maybe visit my cousins who live in Perth) ;;;;;;;

IF ONLY YOU COULD HAVE BEEN THERE BEANS. You definitely need to make it to a Wai-Con sometime! But Happy Chinese New Year for Sunday!

RE: Beloved: Worry not, for your appeasement of the great Post-Action Con Report has been satisfactorily received, and shall grant you respite from reprisal.

That looked so, so fun! One link is broken, though! (The one leading to a facebook page; it has an extra "http", I think)

The skit looked fun!

I'm glad you had such a great time!

Now rest! :o
Feb. 8th, 2013 09:23 am (UTC)
Heh, thank you kind anon, I did hope a con report might make up for it. :) Oh, and thanks for the tip about the link! I'll look into fixing that.
Feb. 8th, 2013 03:45 am (UTC)
You look absolutely awesome. I am in awe. And wow, SWORD. I bet you could make swords and sell them at the mall for $260! Well, maybe not.

I've picked up Skyward Sword recently after about a year, and OMG Ghirarim made me laugh out loud. So true.
Feb. 8th, 2013 09:26 am (UTC)
LOL, definitely not! I'm okay at making incredibly cheap and light weapons out of cardboard, but I have nothing on some of those cosplayers you see who do, like, wood carving and stuff. Thank you though!
Feb. 8th, 2013 02:16 pm (UTC)
Sounds like you had fun.
Feb. 9th, 2013 03:55 am (UTC)
Heaps of it. :)
Feb. 8th, 2013 10:05 pm (UTC)
The con looks awesome ^_^;. Sadly the one con I do go to isn't so much an anime con as a gaming con in general (GenCon Indy). But its still usually full of awesome cosplay.

The costume looked really good even if you did have issues with it. Though having fun is the whole point and it sounds like you had plenty of it ^_^.

I would be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed about the chapter, but that's only because I love it so much. All the Gen/Cloud goodness.

That and I really have no right to say anything since My own updates have went from every 2days to every two weeks if I'm lucky XD. Anyway good luck and hope the craziness calms down soon.
Feb. 9th, 2013 01:09 am (UTC)
Cool! I've been to GenCon before, although it doesn't happen here anymore. Gaming cons are always fun too.

Yeah, sorry about the chapter. As much as I love fanfic, it still has to be one of the last priorities in my life, so when things get busy it's sadly the thing first pushed aside. I'll try my best to keep the wait short as possible though, since I did leave you guys on another cliffhanger. Glad you understand the pain of schedule stretch at least! XD
Feb. 9th, 2013 12:38 am (UTC)
Very cool! Looks like it was a lot of fun. :)
Feb. 11th, 2013 12:53 am (UTC)
OHMYGOD SIIIIIIIN!!!! Your work paid off - you look awesome in that cosplay! Oh lord, all those bits look so complicated but so awesome at the same time. But... why are why only getting half-figure pics of your awesome cosplay, Sin? Me is sad, sad, sad =(

That said, congratulations for your win! IDK about the performance -can't watch the vid on this silly, silly computer- but your group cosplays are well worth it.

But wait, what, no more vinyl for you? How's that? I've only used it once -for some Sengoku-era armour- but I have in mind to totally over-use it for my Magi props. As a cover to other, sterner, stuffier materials it's awesome and so very, very shiny.

Keep Hope alive. Main character. YES. THAT'S WHAT I'VE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG =DDDD

Okay, those Erza and Mirajane on stage? Damn man. I want. So. Badly =D_

Oh, Sin, now I really wish to see you lot cosplay live one day. I really do. You rock! <3
Feb. 11th, 2013 10:15 am (UTC)
Thank you! Ah, I didn't realise! Most of the best pics are waist-up so... (*cough*hides my missing thigh armour*cough*) Here's one of the official ones from the skit:

You might have better luck with vinyl! I don't deny its usefulness, but I found it pretty miserable to work with! Sewing it is a pain and fabric glue/staples are about your only other recourse. It managed to bend a few safety pins too. But then, I am notoriously rubbish at fabrics in general. :P (There's more than one reason I keep choosing the armour-heavy cosplays).

<3 HOPE IS THE BEST. I kept wishing he would become playable, but I guess he was too busy SINGLE-HANDEDLY SAVING HISTORY AND TIME-TRAVELLING THE BADASS WAY.

They were epic weren't they?! *_* I need to watch more Fairy Tail, I dropped off around episode 35 and haven't picked it back up yet.

SAME TO YOU! We'll make it happen sometime, somehow!

Feb. 11th, 2013 12:19 pm (UTC)
Ahahahah! Don't worry, we're way too dizzied by your general amazingitude to notice those picky little details. Mygod, Sin, that WEAPON. Oh that weapon... I hope you managed to swing it around as it deserves to be swinged (swung? whatever xD) and displayed.

Out of curiosity, how heavy was it? Oo'

OKAY I get what you mean about vinyl now. Yeah, you're totally right - it's a nightmare when sewing. If I'm to get a vinyl look in clothes I tend to go for vinyl-ish pleather -if I can get it on sale, that is- since it's sturdier, not so stretchable, and easier to sew.

I was talking about pasting vinyl on weapons and big, built-in pieces of costumes, though. Something like - using it instead of painting, as an over-sheet? Do you use that? I tend to -if done right it looks pretty cool- but I have two left hands, so... yeah.

HOPE ROCKS. God I'm so doing Hope sooner or later. Hopefully sooner...

<-is now wondering about Hope in Lightning Returns xD

Meh. IDEK about Fairy Tail. I mean, I follow it on and off, but it's so, so very clichéd... I don't know. I enjoy it well enough, and I love some of the character designs -I cosplayed Erza once, and the bf cosplayed rocker!Gajeel- but the story isn't all that gripping, to me. Plus, there are sooooo many shiny new shows to watch. Like the one about gay basketball players. Or the one about gay Arabians with genies. SO MUCH POTENTIAL THERE >D =P

OH YES PLEASE! Sooner or later, we must. I mean, you were cool when we were just Tenipuri-ing, but now you're, like ten times cooler. And it would be SO MUCH FUN =DDDD
Feb. 11th, 2013 12:36 pm (UTC)
Indeed, sword-swinging was part of the skit! (Although I only really got one good swing out of it). It wasn't heavy at all, it was all cardboard and foam, it was only tricky wielding it because of Caius's impractical wrist armour.

Ah, interesting! Yeah, vinyl could definitely be useful in those cases, although I tend to just go down the painting route anyway usually, and then varnish to make it shiny.

He'd better show up in Lightning Returns! Urgh, that game is surely years away yet though? Square takes forever on these things.

I need to watch that basketball one, I've been hearing a lot about it. *__* Eh, Fairy Tail is cliche, but it's good old-fashioned comedic fantasy, which has not really had any worthwhile contenders since the days of Slayers.

\o/ AFTER HEARING YOUR STORIES, THOUGH, I'M NOT SO SURE IF I REALLY WANT TO EVER COSPLAY IN JAPAN? But we can surely coordinate a con one day! Japan is not very far from Australia! Flights there are so cheap.
Feb. 12th, 2013 01:15 am (UTC)
Sword-swinging is so shiny. It's like, 'I don't care 'bout your skit, just swing that again, yeah baby just like that' and, uhm. Yeah. ^^'

Wrist armour sucks. It's like those characters with big, round, ornate pieces around their knees. It's so impractical when moving.

Hmmmm. But, even with varnish - doesn't it chip a lot? Half the time I end up with my weapons and stuff showing the material underneath, no matter what sort of paint we use. GAH CONSTRUCTION PROBLEMS.

Ahahahahah, I will! Hope is such a pretty thing. =D_

From what I've read, both him and Snow show up every now and then - only as very secondary though. And I thought the game was very advanced already? Like, there're people try-testing parts of it and stuff.

Kuroko no Basuke's fun. It's like PoT - just like it. It's the same sort of manga, easy to predict but with so many open relationship and different personalities you can't help but being drawn to it.

You make a fine point about Fairy Tail. Okay, I'll take it.

Aw, no - cosplaying in Japan is something one has to do, at least once! Although it's better if one cosplays here knowing what to expect. But YES. (On another note, it might be of interest to point out that I intend to visit Australia in... about a year? But that's something to be talked about a few months from now =P)
Feb. 12th, 2013 10:12 am (UTC)
God, knee armour has been the bane of my existence the past couple of cosplays. It's like character designers have forgotten that joints are supposed to BEND.

I've never had any problems with the varnish chipping! It's usually more of a concern about it sticking to others things and THAT pulling the paint off, but so long as it's stored right it's not been a problem. With paint, I sometimes have to do a couple of coats, and it's definitely better to get the paint from an arts n crafts store instead of a junk shop or newsagent... old/cheap paint will crack and show the material underneath when it dries. :/ And depending on the material you're painting on you need sealant too... oh god how did I get to know about all this stuff? Cosplay gives you a weird knowledge set.

Welp, I'm sold on Kuroko no Basuke now. 'Just like PoT' is a pretty damn convincing sell.

*____* Awesome! You'll have to time your visit to coincide with one of the cons! Heh, well, I might actually make it over to Japan first, really. Was planning a trip for the end of the year, work deadlines being willing. I'll be sure to let you know if I do wind up in the neighbourhood.
Feb. 14th, 2013 04:09 am (UTC)
hi!! this is karina bowater, i think we are friends on fb? also i was the vanille in the sunday group :D
my friend found your lj trying to google looking for videos of her skit (she was one of the totoros) and linked me because you said some lovely things about a bunch of my friends lol.

I am really glad you had a great waicon! It's always such a fun con... i think it's just we have such great people :D!
Anyway, it was really nice meeting you albeit incredibly briefly ( i was sitting next to you in the theatre on saturday too lol), and i hope we get to talk more some time! you seem really lovely :) i'm going to pax and maybe some other east coast cons this year, so maybe i'll see you there? :D
Feb. 14th, 2013 09:56 am (UTC)
Hey, I remember you! :D Ah, we aren't yet, but I sent you a friend request just now. :) Your Vanille on Sunday was fantastic! Your whole group was amazing really, I was sad I didn't get any better pictures! Thankfully others did. :)

And thanks, it was lovely to meet you too! The only problem with Wai-Con was that it was so jam-packed that there wasn't nearly enough time to just hang around and chat with everyone. For sure, if you're ever heading to a con on east coast, let me know! (Although I think I've missed out on PAX, was too slow to buy tickets when they first went on sale! D:)
Feb. 18th, 2013 03:28 am (UTC)
thank you! both our groups looked great. so much awesome ff!! and i'm really glad we were on different days so no-one tried to compare the two groups too much hahaha.

oh my gosh i know, and it doesn't help when being in the comp takes up more than half of your day and you have no time for anything else D:
i think i am also going to avcon (as it is a week before pax) and was thinking of couch surfing till smash, but also will be in melbourne and sydney for quite a while between pax and smash if you would be interested in maybe catching up even though we don't know each other that well?

what's your policy on friending rl people on lj? i have a friendsonly journal with uh, fortnightly to weekly updates on life stuff mostly, but finding out that people i actually know use lj is so rare :O
Feb. 18th, 2013 04:51 am (UTC)
Yes, so lucky we could coordinate! It meant we could have a whole weekend of FF13! It can be fun sometimes when someone else is doing the same character (because you both like the same thing, after all! Instant bond.) but it can also occasionally feel a tiny bit like you've both turned up to the prom in the same dress, lol.

Oh wow, you're doing the full con circuit! That's intense. Odds are pretty good that I'll be going to Smash this year, actually, so we can definitely catch up then! If I'm in Sydney or Melbourne at any other point during that period I'll be sure to let you know.

On rl LJ friending, I have no particular policy on it because it so rarely happens! But I'm okay with it, since my journal's already almost totally public anyway. :) Consider yourself friended!
Feb. 21st, 2013 05:24 am (UTC)
yeah, i was even nervous because you guys had a vanille too, but i think we approached the outfit in different enough ways that it didn't matter :)
Still, we all looked so good! ff for the win :) for all the hating people do, they are really well designed outfits that come together well

ok! let me know!( which city do you live in then?) we will definitely catch up :D

ok we are friends now yay ;D
Feb. 21st, 2013 10:34 am (UTC)
Yeah, everyone looked great! Heh, I think the crazy-detailed cosplays benefit in some ways from their insane detail, because it distracts the eye from a lot of other problems! Whereas simpler cosplays, it's really easy to see where you've missed something or screwed up. :P

I live in Brisbane actually! It's weird but I think I actually know more people in other states now than here. XD
Feb. 25th, 2013 01:19 pm (UTC)
yeah. all the designs are pretty cool. but you know some designs look good drawn, but would look horrendous if you actually made it look like that?

oh, i'll be on the gold coast for a while. i'll let you know and hopefully we can meet up!
Feb. 17th, 2013 11:18 pm (UTC)
Late reply, but you look fantastic as usual! If only I had the patience and skills to make complex armor costumes as you do.

Haha, I know exactly how you feel about the vinyl. I'm making a D.Gray-Man uniform right now and it's all pleather and vinyl and just. HEADACHES EVERYWHERE.
Feb. 18th, 2013 04:57 am (UTC)
Thank you! Ahahaha, I could say the same about your costumes! But we've had this conversation before. :P

Oh wow, D.Gray-Man! Which character are you doing? (They are all pretty awesome.) Much respect!
Feb. 18th, 2013 08:50 am (UTC)

Ah, I'm making Kanda's 2nd uniform (I've cosplayed his training outfit before). ALL THE SEWING PAINNNN.
Feb. 18th, 2013 02:34 pm (UTC)
Kanda! *__* You'll make a fantastic Kanda for sure, I can't wait to see it! Wow, though, it really is a tough one! GOOD LUCK, I HAVE FAITH THAT YOU CAN DO IT.
Feb. 18th, 2013 11:53 pm (UTC)
Wehhh thank you, I need the luck indeed!! *__* ♥
Feb. 18th, 2013 04:49 am (UTC)
omg I googled "wai con cosplay" because I'm still not over wai con and I totally found this! Your write up is so much better than mine. heh
Feb. 18th, 2013 05:15 am (UTC)
OMG Hi Bec! LOL, I'm not over Wai-Con either, it was too much fun!
