Smash! 2013

So! I haven't been writing much the past two weeks, because I have been too busy having adventures.

One of these many adventures was Smash! in Sydney! Smash is probably my third-favourite con now (after PAX and Wai-Con) because even though it's only one day, it's one day absolutely crammed full of awesome things to see and do. Most cons I'm happy to trawl the trader's hall, maybe catch a screening, and chase down cosplayers for photographs and hang out with/meet new friends, but Smash is one of the cons where I want to go to panels and screenings and comps and since it's only one day you're forced to choose.

I cosplayed as Zelgadis from Slayers. You know, that 90s fantasy comedy anime in Megumi Hashibara's heyday? It was awesome.

(This guy)

Zelgadis Cosplay

Photos all courtesy of my regular partner-in-crime, agentlerain <3 - take a look at her cosplay photography page, there are a bunch of amazing Dynasty Warriors pics on there you should definitely check out! So talented.

Zelgadis Cosplay Smash

Even though I haven't ever really dug deep into the fandom itself, Slayers was (and still is) one of my favourite animes of all-time, and Zelgadis one of my favourite characters. After some of my stupidly complicated costumes I wanted to get back to something a little simpler and less-stressful and more in my skill level instead of several million miles beyond it.

Overall I'm reasonably happy with how it turned out, aside from the wig which was a total disaster, but hey, in canon his hair is wire which he cuts with pliers so that's my excuse. *cough*. I really should have just put up the hood all day. Always one thing goes wrong! But the cosplay otherwise held up well all day, I touched up the makeup a tiny bit once but that was it.

Not many people recognised it, but those that did were totally jazzed which absolutely made my day.

Group cosplay

Mostly hung out with the G!Cosplay crew, who are awesome and of which I appear to have become some sort of orbiter/honorary member. We were only an hour late leaving for the con! Some kind of record.

Before hitting Smash we hit up the Chinese Gardens for the Dynasty Warriors trio to photoshoot (which is where the above photos were taken too). The Gardens were absolutely lovely, and we weren't the only cosplayers in there taking advantage!

812590_610237115664883_881780737_o

After feeling left out of the epic romance shots with Zhuge Liange and Yueying, Wang Yuanji and I decided to stage our own epic crossover AU romance! XD BRB writing awful fanfic.

We finally tottered into Smash itself around lunchtime, at which point the line had almost finished processing so that was really a lucky coincidence.  We did a quick pass of the Trader's Hall but it was super-crowded and moved like molasses so we retreated outside and headed to Loverin Tamburin in the main theatre - a Japanese pop group doing some covers of anime songs. The only one I recognised was from Dragon Ball, but she had fantastic showmanship and seemed to knock that one out of the park so I'll assume all the others were similarly done justice.

2013-08-10 13.01.49

Aside from that, I didn't really take any photos at all in the con! All the photos here were taken by others. Very sorry. My fingers were blue which meant I pretty much avoided handling anything if I could help it because even though the makeup I used on my fingers was fairly smudge-resistant once it had properly set, tempting fate wasn't a good idea.

Still, there are plenty of other awesome photosets and video compilations out already! Here's a cool video (first of two parts), and here's an excellent photo album if you want to see more awesome, and especially if you like Attack on Titan or Super Smash Bros, because there were a bunch of those and they were all fantastic.

I didn't get to any as many of the panels that I wanted to, but did tag along to a pretty excellent cosplay photography panel with agentlerain and we also checked out the AMV finals!  The winner of the Judge's Choice Award made me want to watch Gurren Lagaan again! Drama/Romance winner was well made too, although looks like that one has been entered in a few cons... And the winner of the comedy category started with me somewhat unimpressed but as it progressed couldn't help but laugh.

Then before we knew it the day was over and everybody realised we hadn't eaten so we tromped out to Darling Quarter in search of food and freaked out the general public. There was at least one kid loudly stage-whispering to his parents that I was scary, and we also had a few random citizens come up wanting photos which always feels a bit weird outside of the con context. Probably the weirdest was waiting in the Guylian cafe bathroom for the toilet and all the double-takes as others came in to join the line. It's surprisingly hard to explain cosplay and conventions to people who know absolutely nothing about the geekier end of pop culture.

We caught up with some other friends from Perth and Melbourne over the con and weekend too, it was really fun to hang out with everyone! Bunch of totally cool cats. (And everyone who cosplayed looked so fabulous, too, blows my mind sometimes.) Many desserts were had. Many, many, many desserts. I'm still coming down from the sugar high. Also many streetpasses. Guys, I'm a little addicted to Streetpass Plaza.

That was only the very beginning of the adventures, but that's a whole other post worth of stuff to cover it.  TL;DR, Smash was fun, cosplay is fun, and it made me miss a lot of anime! Have been feeling very out of the loop with the new stuff, last thing I think I watched was Kuroko no Basuke and Devil Survivor 2... maybe time for another anime binge!

SLAYERS!!!

I'll still find myself humming the opening to the first season under my breath. I remember the night before leaving to University (for one year, made the mistake of getting into a very costly place rather than going to local) my best friend and I stayed up all night marathoning Season 1 of Slayers, bootleg on vhs thanks to the difficulties of getting legal copies in the 90's.

The really sad thing is, I'll occasionally ask myself, "What Would Lina Inverse Do?"

God, I need to get my own copy of that series. So many memories brought back by seeing that costume.

'What Would Lina Inverse Do?' The answer is always 'FIRRRRREEEEBAAAAAAALLLLL!' XD

Ahhhhh so happy to hear other Slayers fans around! Same, it was such a pain to track down the VHSes! I was lucky that my local video store had the first season and one of the movies (Still love Naga the Great White Serpent! Ohohohohohoho!) Great memories.

Hey, not always!

... sometimes her answer is, "EAT EVERYTHING!!! STAB GOURRY WITH A FORK IF HE GETS IN MY WAY!!!"

Or it starts with, "Darkness beyond twilight, crimson beyond blood that flows..."

What Would Lina Do has ruined more diets... the Dragon Slave chant does send lovely shivers, does it not?

Though I did not comment on fb I totally recognized Zelgadis =D Slayers was one of the first anime my school friends were into, though at that time I wasn't really interested in anime =D

<3 Heh, it's maybe showing our age, isn't it? It's such a classic though. There haven't really been any that pull off that genre nearly as well!

Looks like you had a great time! (As well as at PAX :>)

Do you want anime recs for your anime binge? :3cwatch attack on titan--

Attack on Titan is definitely on the list! Any others that come very high in your esteem? It's never very hard to find something that sounds interesting, but so few anime ideas live up to their potential...

Yes, good, because Attack on Titan is fantastic.

Polar Bear Cafe is a great little slice of life anime that's awesome for nice, relaxing little pick me up. It's about the whimsical daily lives of animals and humans living together in a town. Often they congregate at a cafe run by a polar bear. Yes. Literally the perfect anime imo. Finished around the time the Devil Survivor 2 anime came out (so... March?), at 50 episodes. You'll usually find it under the title: Shirokuma Cafe

If you don't mind a slightly older pick, I've also been rewatching Tiger and Bunny, which... I can't even do justice. Corporate sponsored superheroes fighting crime and saving lives as part of a super popular reality TV show HERO TV. Fantastic characters and character interaction, awesome animation, incredibly good pacing, 25 episodes.

Two movies! First one is the first two episodes of T&B? But the second one that is supposedly coming out in 2014 is going to be a sequel so I'm looking forward to that

I have a feeling it's because I didn't bother much with the trader's hall and that I also skipped the cosplay comp for the AMVs. When we met up at the end of the day you guys did mention that the cosplay comp was a bit of a disaster, right? (And coming from Perth, you'd have especially high standards after John MC-ing things!) And considering it's such a big chunk of the day that could put a big damper on things.

It was cool to see you too! Lunch on Friday was a lot of fun as well. I also have no idea, but we both seem to travel a bit for cons so I'm sure our paths will cross again sometime!

oh? i thought you were saying you enjoyed the traders hall? it had a lot of reallyc cool thing sin it but it was laid out badly D:

maybe just in general i have been spoiled for cons lol. i would like to see more cons :)

yes, i will hopefully see you again soon :)

Nah, the trader's hall was overcrowded and like you said, not a great layout! Same problem as Supanova's, really... but that suited me as I didn't want to be tempted to spend money. :)

Haha I do have to say that Wai-Con is one of the best! And PAX was super-awesome too, our standards are rising! Cons in general have been getting better overall I think, they've all come so far over the past ten years!

aww it's honestly so nice to hear you like wai-con a lot, specially how a lot of people here diss it only because they haven't experienced other cons D:
i really hope cons are getting better haha

Just a heads up too that I'm planning on doing a day of Brisnova. May see you there :)

You should! First season at least.

Nice! I'm not 100% sure if I'm going yet but still planning on it, you'll have to let me know and we can meet up! Are you going to cosplay? If we're both cosplaying should make it easier to pick each other out. :)

Heh of course there will be cosplay. Currently I'm planning Momo from Breath of Fire III. I have everything to make her except for wigs to hack and slash. A couple months to create her in should be plenty of time provided I start soon. She'll probably end up my lightest/coolest to wear. Will you have a new cosplay to wear or planning to wear a current one?

Plan is to drag my eldest niece along with me for the Saturday as I may or may not get the Sunday off work.

Aug. 25th, 2013 05:01 am (UTC)
MOMO? BREATH OF FIRE 3?! *___* Oh man I am going to flail at you so hard, I apologise in advance for my fangirling. I adore the Breath of Fire series! Good luck!

I have a bunch of cosplays in the works (I keep swearing I'm going to stop/do fewer but never do), depending on how I go I'm hoping to do The White Witch Cassiopeia from Ni No Kuni one day (will probably melt in it, but that's not new) and maybe Rydia from FF4 the other.
gardensgnome
Aug. 25th, 2013 06:04 am (UTC)
Well I'm going to attempt Momo, attempt being the word for it XD Totally going to be a short Momo too. What are the prop rules like? I'm planning to make the bazooka if I can as well.

I have a few in progress cosplays so I know your pain *grin* Everything is just too shiny and simply has to be made. I'm not familiar with Cassiopeia but Rydia sounds familiar although I've not played FF4. I'll have to make sure to look up a pic before I head to con so I know who I'm looking for ;)

Aug. 25th, 2013 07:40 am (UTC)
Big things they may make you check in (you can check them back out again for the comp if you enter, and if you're just hanging around outside you can say you're on your way out/on your way in and they'll let it drop usually too). If it's obviously fake and cardboard and unable to harm anyone you can probably get away with it. They have their policy up on their website but in truth they're usually pretty slack about enforcing it, and typically only go after anything that looks like a real gun or is sharp.

Ah, I should have linked pics for reference! Cassiopeia's troublesome to find reference pics for, but here's one: http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130308202005/ninokuni/images/1/18/Ni-No-Kuni-witch.jpg
And Rydia: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8lMx1o3NyFE/TeWoHAKpStI/AAAAAAAAANs/wWgiDl2GN4s/s400/rydia.jpg

...I can fully see myself going 'stuff it this is too hard' on at least one of them though and rewearing something instead. ^_^; But we still have two months to do it!
gardensgnome
Aug. 25th, 2013 09:09 am (UTC)
*laughs* Well the bazooka is definitely not sharp. More just large but if I make it right I'll be able to take it apart. I don't plan on entering any comps. I'll go have a poke at it, maybe send off an query about it all.

All I can think of those two pics is wow and I hope it's not too hot. Least as Rydia you'll be cool-ish.

We can do this! But I fear the two months will go entirely too quickly for my liking.
gardensgnome
Oct. 18th, 2013 02:19 am (UTC)
Looks like I won't be needing to worry about the bazooka as Momo's wig is a no-go. Momo will have to wait until next year now. New challenge is to find a light-ish back up cosplay that I can make in time. All the cosplays I have in my collection are for cooler weather D: Hope all your cosplays are coming together easier than my mess.

Oct. 18th, 2013 02:58 am (UTC)
Ah, what a bummer! Well, you still have three weeks to whip something together? :) (Nina?)

I'm pretty far along with Cassiopeia, should be able to finish her in time. Not sure if I'll be able to manage Rydia in the remaining time though - might have to try to finish Flandre instead, or maybe re-wear something. Fingers crossed for both of us!
gardensgnome
Oct. 18th, 2013 04:34 am (UTC)
I'm definitely not Nina material. I was thinking more along the lines of maybe a Bleach shinigami academy uniform, hoping that would work out cooler than the regular Bleach captain's outfit or digging out the fabric I brought years ago to make Tir from Suikoden. I don't have a wig for Tir, my own hair might work out to be long enough in its shortness.

There needs to be a way for us to go 'this cosplay' and have it pop up exactly as we envisioned it in out minds.

I'm rather tempted to just go in casual clothes and shop without worry about getting stopped for pics. It's been a while since I attended a con as myself.
sinnatious
Oct. 18th, 2013 05:14 am (UTC)
All good options. LOL, how often I have wished to just imagine a cosplay (or fanfic, or anything else, really) into existence. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Going casual can be fun too, especially given how many families and sticky-beaks frequent BrisNova these days. It can indeed be a little annoying when parents are stopping you for photos with their kids and they don't even know what your costume is from. Plus you're guaranteed to be comfortable! I have a bad habit of making uncomfortable cosplays (can't see, can't sit, can't bend elbows, too hot, too cold...).
gardensgnome
Oct. 19th, 2013 02:03 am (UTC)
I had that whole kid pic thing happen when I wore Braska to Mani a couple years back. Cute kid too but really weird to be asked to have a picture taken with them. I'm used to fellow fans knowing who I am supposed to be.

I hear you on the uncomfortable cosplay angle. That was my original version of Braska in that I was too hot in him and had difficulty sitting down and getting up. Didn't matter though as that was the year I made new friends because they were doing a FFX group and we all discovered each other.

I had a quick look at the long-range forecast and it's predicting 24C for Brisnova Saturday. I'm now deciding to be completely lazy and go with Hibari...and I'm amused that you used him as your icon :D I'll be doing VG Cambio Forma version too but if it gets too warm I'll just ditch the coat and attach the armband to a sleeve.

I've still not yet grabbed a ticket though just in case something comes up and I don't make it down for the day. Think the line will be that bad? I'm not worried about the extra $2.50 that will be purchasing a ticket on the day. Maybe next time I'll be more organized and do all three days of the con instead of just one.

Oct. 19th, 2013 03:00 am (UTC)
Yeah, always a little odd when someone wants a photo who doesn't have the context. Of course, I'll take kids over guys who just take photos with female cosplayers without knowing the source any day, that always feels kinda skeezy. Or when you're outside the con getting food or going to and from and random members of the public ask!

I don't think I've ever seen your Braska! Do you have photos anywhere? *_*

Hibariiiii! *__* Good plan! Are you going to make a little Hi-bird to sit on your shoulder? 24C is actually darn pleasant, hope that forecast doesn't change!

Ah, jeez, that reminds me, I need to grab my ticket too. The line is always crazy at Supanova, literally thousands of people long, they've become better at moving it through but you either have to turn up quite early (no later than 9am, I'd recommend 8 or earlier) to get a decent position in line or don't turn up until at least 11 to when a decent portion of the line is cleared, without prepaid maybe even 12. I'm going both Sat and Sun so will probably do the latter personally, but if you're only going one... With Moshtix though since you can just print out maybe you can just buy at the last minute?

Comment hopping because skinny comment reading areas are hard :D

Definitely kids over the whole random guy thing. That does have the creepy vibe to it if they only go around getting pics taken with girls without knowing the cosplay.

Braska, Aki-con 2009. I totally look like I'm floating XD I want to do a remake of him, see if I can't get the cosplay as a whole a bit more warm weather friendly. You make me tempted to do a repair job on him for Brisnova but he really needs a full remake plus travelling long distances by train is not something I should so in Braska.

I'm coming down from the coast via train so won't be there until after 9am. Might have to go see when the pre-paid cutoff date is and have a serious think.

Dammit I won't have time to remake Braska *cries* Though really I should stop considering him now that he's been mentioned. When I do drag Braska off to a con again I'm so going to try to have a Jecht and Auron cos that would be many levels of awesome.

I have a itty-bitty Hibird but without the hair because I haven't managed yet to get it how I think it should look...and a hugeass beanbag size Hibird that went to Mani with me. We met a young girl doing chibi!Lambo and she was adorable.

LOL good idea. My journal layout isn't friendly to long threads.

Oh woooooow! *__* You totally do look like you're floating! HOW ON EARTH DID YOU GET THE FABRIC TO DO THAT? I can see what you mean about warm-weather friendliness and travelling though. Public transport in cosplay is a pain (could always get changed at the con I guess? But that has its own hassles.) Heh, and you really do need a Jecht and Auron! Or at least a Yuna (you could always find a Yuna, there's always at least one!) Looks amazing though~

LOL, the choice between a tiny Hibird and a giant Hibird! How can you possibly choose?!

Oooh that does help. I need to poke around and get my ticket and pop extra funds on the gocard. November got here really fast, almost too fast.

Remind me to pm you my mobile so we can find each other at con :D I won't have the giant Hibird and so won't be overly obvious.

Doing anything for halloween? I've dragged my Trevor Belmont cosplay out to wear to work today. The boots are going to be the death of me. No trick or treat at my house this year though as I don't get off work until 5pm and won't have time to set up my porch with anything remotely halloween themed. Must make sure I have candy though as no doubt kids will turn up anyways seeing as I did something last year.

Also must remember to reply to your last comment later when I get home. Time to start the long process of getting organized for work. Wearing Hitsugaya last year was so much easier.

Oooo, nice! Heh, pretty cool that your work lets you turn up in full costume! Any good reactions from customers? My only Halloween plans is virtual Halloween in Animal Crossing. :P Although that's a point, I doubt we'll get trick or treaters but I ought to procure a bag of lollies today just in case.

Late comment is late, sorry! D': I need to spend more time in LJ-land.

Your cosplay looks fab, I'm sad I didn't get to see you ;A; I haven't seen you in ages actually. I love how the photoshoot turned out! You should have a site (like dA or an FB page) where you put them all in one place for creeps like me to stare at. Hahaha.

That's awesome that you got into the Chinese Gardens, did the staff give you any trouble? I actually heard that they've been cracking down on cosplay shoots in the last few months :/ they're not too happy with them happening in the Gardens.

Glad to hear you had fun at SMASH / in Syd though! :D We definitely, definitely need to catch up at Brisnova DX

It has been a while, hasn't it? Our curse of always missing each other at cons continues to run strong. LOL you keep saying that about a site but I still cannot be bothered. :P

No trouble at the Chinese Gardens! They gave us a mini-lecture upon entering about keeping to the paths and not climbing on things or getting in the way of other guests, but that was it. One of the staff tracked us down later and asked if some bags piled up in one of the pagodas was ours but they were't and they did say they were glad that we at least were following the rules, so sounded like they were a little exasperated with some of the other cosplay groups there. Maybe the source?

For sure! At this stage I'll still be going, we'll definitely have to hang out!

LMAO HAVE I?? I must be getting senile because I can't remember urging you to get a site hahaha. (But then again, I tell urge everyone to get sites orz). Damnit :P oh well, fair enough! Sorry if it got naggy lol.

Ooh that's good! I know of some friends who were going to shoot in there and then actually got kicked out. This was during the SMASH! period, too o___o;; so weird. I might go back and give it a try sometime and see if they might be more lenient!
sinnatious
Aug. 30th, 2013 02:21 pm (UTC)
LOL, it's okay, it's not naggy! I'm admittedly terrible at posting things anywhere other than this LJ in general... idk, part of it might also be that it doesn't feel as big a fandom thing for me as fanfic is, it's more something I do on the side to make cons more fun (and the arts and crafts side of it is a big part too). In any case, I just don't feel as serious or committed enough to it to be making pages like everyone else seems to be! That is my flimsy reasoning, anyway. :P

Actually got kicked out? Yikes! Maybe it was after - we went in the morning, and there were a couple of groups in there at the same time as us, so perhaps they finally decided to start kicking people out. If more than one group got caught climbing where they shouldn't for poses or leaving all of their equipment laying around... LOL I do feel a little sorry for the staff, it appears to be a popular locale for photoshoots! (It's so pretty though, it's no wonder. I want to go back in civvies sometime to just enjoy the scenery~)
