Brisnova 2013

So! Supanova Brisbane 2013 was last weekend. Or as I liked to call it, Nintendo Streetpass Palooza 2013 with a side of cosplay.

Seriously I spent at least half of the time just collecting streetpasses, guys.

White Witch Cassiopeia Cosplay Supanova

On Saturday I went as The White Witch Cassiopeia from Ni No Kuni. A heap of people recognised it, which was kind of surprising!  (Please ignore strange cape physics in this photo.)  Haha, although you could spot the people who actually finished the game by which name they called out to get my attention.

Cassiopeia Ni No Kuni cosplay

Surprisingly, the costume was not at all that sweltering in the heat. Maybe the power of glorious reflective outer white layer? All that white was a curse though, you know the very instant I went to eat I spilled tomato sauce on the damn thing. Hence after this photo my pose constantly alternated between 'holding my crown up' and 'showing off cape interior to hide the sauce stain'.

Was pretty happy with the costume considering I did it all very very budget. I would maybe like to revisit this one day with more money.

Turned up somewhat early to the con for once, stood in line for about 45 minutes. Mostly because the friend I was going with wanted to get photos with some of the guests. So once inside I was left to my own devices to wander the pavilion, which I did for all of half an hour before wandering off to find a nice bit of shade to sit under and collect streetpasses.

Then these two cool cats showed up! Hibari and 20yrslater Lambo! KHR disappeared so quickly from the cosplay scene, it was neat to see these! Hibari's coat in particular was mind-blowing, it's a shame this photo really doesn't show the awesome detail.

Spent a big chunk of Saturday hanging out with these guys. Was very awesome to meet you gardensgnome, I had a blast! Was heaps of fun chilling with the pair of you. Even if it was a bit difficult to speak with mask on, lol.

At that point we started making tracks for the Madman Nationals.  Despite attempting to turn up early, we still wound up with pretty crappy seats and couldn't see much.  But the Nationals are as always mind-blowing.

This was one of the contestants! Pandora's Hearts I believe?

2013-11-09-14.49.22-2

And my personal favourite - Matteus from FF2! She came third! SO EPIC, GUYS. So so epic. And her skit was amaaaaazing and hilarious - you can see it here http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/40601528 it starts at 01:10:00 (right near the end). I HAVE ALSO WONDERED ABOUT THIS GAME MECHANIC A LOT.

IMG_2769

This photo is actually from Sunday when I ran into Will on my way out of the con - a very poor photo of two amazing cosplays. Origami Cyclone! He came second, his skit was also amazing. You can see it at the same place, timecode 00:57:30. Hopefully better versions will turn up on Youtube sometime soon.

I sadly didn't manage to snag a picture of the winner, I wasn't familiar with her cosplay but the embroidery was amaaazing and she had a very action-packed skit. Seriously, Nationals, they are just nuts.

In no particular order here are a bunch of other photos I snagged on the Saturday!

IMG_2718

Eva Unit-01~!

IMG_2748

Dug Duo~! I was too slow to get the kid Pikachu cosplayer posing with them, darn it!

IMG_2751

An unusually excellent Spiderman. And Edward Elric chilling in the background there.  Oh look, someone else addicted to Nintendo Streetpass! High-five stranger.

IMG_2749

TOOTHLESS. How even.

IMG_2754

Ran into silverharmony entirely by chance, doing yet another awesome Meiko cosplay. So pro as always.  Haha, though she was kind of confused when ambushed by this mask-wearing person calling out her name. Sorry about that!

IMG_2756

Luke from Professor Layton! The dog in the background is a glorious coincidence (or perhaps is just that good with animals). I geeked out a little. DID ANYONE ELSE REALISE THAT AZRAN LEGACY WAS OUT? I have way too many damn awesome games to play.

That about wraps up the Saturday! I eventually found my original friend again and we headed home. About 6 hours is my standard tolerance for Supanova apparently. Especially in Brisbane where it's always so damn hot and crowded. Plus friend and I were heading out to finally see Thor 2 that night and needed time to defrock and shower before the movie. (Also, Thor 2 guys! I actually had pretty low expectations but wow, those twists~!)

IMG_2760

Sunday I went as Rydia! This is probably the only photo of it, as only two people recognised it! The whole thing was done so so cheap, and I pretty much did the entire lot in the four days before the con. It was held together with pins and glue and fishing line and a prayer. Amazingly, nothing broke, although I have a terrible feeling I flashed some people my butt because ahahah, terribly short skirt (which was normally covered by my cape, but not when the wind was gusting everywhere). There were a lot of unfinished details too since I ran out of time.

Somehow this was more uncomfortable to wear than Cassiopeia. Just awkward long bits of flaily fabric everywhere, and the shoes were killer on my feet. >__< Also I felt strangely patriotic wearing it? All that green and gold, lol.

2013-11-10 12.14.24

One of the two people who recognised it, a very cool Madoka cosplayer! She and her friend were very nice, we chatted for a few minutes. I really have to get around to watching Madoka, enough people have recc'd it to pique my curiosity.

2013-11-10 10.54.18

JABBA THE HUTT. I dearly hope this person found the 501st legion and posed for hundreds of photos.

IMG_2764

Serah from FF13-2! She was also very nice, poor thing got sunburnt though. New con lesson - even if you're in costume, sunscreen is important! My friend missed a patch next to her watch, and while the rest of her was just fine, that part was lobster-red.

IMG_2765

Ahaha, Kuroko no Basuke cosplay! So awesome.

IMG_2766

RWBY cosplayers have started turning up in force!

IMG_2771

Old-school Rogue!

IMG_2768

And to close off, an adorable pair of Journey cosplayers. They settled in the hall outside the cosplay comp in meditation pose, was brilliant. I was lucky enough to be sitting right next to them collecting streetpasses so grabbed this pic.

Then to finish off with a tale of woe, I decided to head out around 3:30 in order to beat the storms gathering. Only when I got the carpark, I couldn't find my car! I walked up and down for half an hour systematically looking for my car and making a bit of an idiot out of myself and absolutely killing my feet and starting to freak out wondering if it had been stolen or something tragically nefarious like that, until I discovered I was looking into the wrong carpark.

Epic facepalm.

But I at least managed to drive out right before the first rain started to fall, presumably turning the entire carpark into a massive mudpit. Mwa ha ha ha.

All in all, another successful Supanova! Had a great time, collected a couple of hundred streetpasses, managed to avoid spending money, saw some really really cool cosplays. And I hear that next year they're moving it to the Convention Centre! (About freaking time).

Ahhh, a Singaporean con would have been cool! Alas, timing.

I really need to get around to playing Ni No Kuni, but I have like four games I need to finish first before getting another game. And that's not counting my pokemon games still. <<;;;; //might be hellbent on completing the dex for the first time since Platinum

Anyway, such lovely cosplay! I just wish I knew more of the media so I could have even better appreciation for some of these. uvu

I have a mighty need to give the biggest hug to that Toothless oh my lord *flails*

Drop them all and play Ni No Kuni! You won't regret it. /is biased.

Know that feeling, there were heaps of awesome-looking cosplays at the con which I didn't recognise, leaves you feeling a bit out of touch!

*huuuuuuuugs* It was great to meet you too although we'd met before at Mani and not realized XD

You got some good pics and I'm totally stealing the one of myself and Jess. Sadly the horns are no more as when we were in the pavilion some idiot waving his arms about went past and knocked them from her head and one broke off and the other has a crack nearly the whole way through. Now need to make my own Lambo horns as they were made by a friend.

You look good in green :D Rydia had to be so much more cooler than the White Witch even with the uncomfortableness. Was is just randomly uncomfortable or was it the worry of things breaking while at con that made it troublesome?

Sauce = blood from battles, remember? *grin*

Toothless! Would you believe that Toothless is and 11yo? Poor kid's mum kept walking into the pavilion while the kid got stopped and asked to show their band. I ended up yelling 'mum' to get her attention and she came back and told the staff that Toothless was a child. Serious cosplay dedication for a kid to wander around con on their hands. They are going to go places with future cosplays I'm sure.

I think the winner of the cosplay was doing A Bride's Story manga? That's the only thing that I can find that looks familiar. It was nice to get seats but yeah they were crappy and it was a shame that they were using the screen for visual add-in components rather than so people could see what was going on. Perhaps dual screens were needed or for the stage to be built up above head level.

I was very happy to have someone to do synchronized squee with when Origami Cyclone was announced. That was funny. I wonder if Jess has seen Tiger & Bunny. If not she needs to be exposed to it.

Jabba! I hope they found the 501st as well. Hell wish I'd gotten more pics of them. Jabba so needs slave!Leia on a leash >.>

I had total con withdrawal Saturday night and promptly started checking out when Supanova was on elsewhere. Vaguely thinking Sydnova as it'll be in winter and I could totally wear Braska and not melt.

Really did have a brilliant time hanging out. We must do that again <3

Doesn't count until there is a name attached to the face! XD

Sure, feel free to repost the pic of you and Jess wherever you like. You guys looked great. Hibird~! That's dreadful about the horns though! D:

Actually Rydia wasn't cooler at all! I don't know if it was just more humid on the Sunday or what, but I think all that reflective white on Cassiopeia really did make a big difference. Plus sun protection~! Wasn't really a worry about knocking things over so much as there were a bunch of different parts of the costume to keep track of. Mostly the sleeves. After sitting down I managed to stand on the end of one of my sleeves to briefly hilarious effect.

Toothless was just a kid?! Well, I guess only a kid could have that much energy and be that limber. Indeed, that's pretty hardcore, we can expect great things from this child in the future!

Ah, A Bride's Story, good find! Yes I think you might be right. A little eclectic in terms of choice but well done. Really, Supanova just needs proper stadium seating. Maybe next year when they're at the convention centre... hopefully they booked the stadium part!

\o/ Origami Cyclone was the coolest. Getting to the see the costume up close later, it was so pro. And that skit was awesome. You need to get Jess onto Tiger & Bunny!

LOL, oh man, post con blues are harsh aren't they? I was moping for days. XD Sydnova's a good idea! Smash is in Sydney winter too, I would also recommend that con. Yes, we must hang out again, I had a glorious time. Haha, it was also nice to hang out with some cosplayers from the same state for once! :P Stay high and dry amidst all the crazy storms.

Rydia of the Miiiiist! I find early FF cosplay (and by that I mean III-IV) so sweet; it's not that common but it really brings back so many nice memories.

Wait, what? KHR disappeared fast from the cosplay scene around there? Huh, how strange. There are always a few KHR cosplayers in cons here in Japan, and one can *always* find big Vongola/Varia/Arcobaleno/younameit cosplay groups in almost any convention back in Europe; it's become classic cosplay, of sorts. (Half the time *we*'re that group, but hey xD)

I don't recognise the girl in blue from Pandora, though, and I should. I love that manga. The anime sucks, though. Pandora anime? What anime? :P She might be from another anime, perhaps. Or maybe from that game? All that detail, it kind of screams 'game', doesn't it? Maybe not. Hahah ^^'

Oh hello there Will. Awesome as usual =D

Also, I haven't played Ni no Kuni yet but your White Witch looks amazing. Do you have any pictures showing the inside of the cape? You can sort-of-see-it in the first pic up there, but it looks so cool as to deserve a better look <3

\o/ Rydia was one of my favourites (I'm slowly working my way through the FF4 cast...) I'm surprised there aren't more early FF cosplays at cons! Dissidia seems to have brought a few to the fore though, hence that fabulous Matteus cosplay.

Yeah, it's pretty rare to see KHR here these days! It peaked about two years ago and almost nothing since. Unless there are just a lot of casual or solo versions that don't stand out from the crowd.

The blue cosplayer - it was definitely from a game, maybe I got it mixed up and she's actually from the ShadowHearts game series? :S I didn't recognise it from that either, but then, it's been a long time since I played it.

Will's so consistently epic it's unfair, really. XD

I don't have any good pics of it myself, all I have a WIP pic from when I was painting it - 20130827_201701

Old-school FF, ah. I like the way you're going about FF4, then - might want to do that for FF3 myself at some point in life. I always thought Luneth was adorable... although now I think about it, he was the split image of Gokudera! Hahahahah.

Wow. You painted the whole inside, not just the parts that would show. That's thorough. I looks epic, Sin *_________________*

Oh man, FF3 cosplay would be amazing~ You should do it! I've always wanted to do Arc personally (always have a soft spot for the mages) but I'm not really a good fit for him. XD (Not that that always stops me...) Luneth was the coolest~ Well, all four were pretty neat, I'm sad I've never seen an FF3 group before!

Thanks! It's a bit silly to spend so much time on something that doesn't get seen in most photos but it was super fun to paint.

Nov. 26th, 2013 01:57 pm (UTC)
Thanks! It was a blast.

Ah, I don't know if I have spoken to her before or not actually, I have a weird feeling I may have run into her at a previous Supanova? Cosplay makes recognising people tough. But yeah, I guess she was a little odd. She came up out the blue and asked me what my cosplay was from which was nice but caught me by surprise, but then got a little standoffish immediately after that when I complimented her Nationals performance? Nothing bad really I just couldn't get a read on her, mixed signals. Do you know her from elsewhere?

umm just weird stuff from perthnova and the rumor mill about how she NEVER takes off her glasses even for photoshoots and aparrently she's really full of herself i dunno i get a really weird vibe from her?

i might just be bitter that she took perth rep at madman though lol
