End of Year Meme 2013!

It's that time again! End of Year Meme time!

1. What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
Went to Singapore! And Taiwan. And all the never-done-before things that entailed.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
No and no. :(

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
No, although an old high school friend announced her pregnancy. Things start getting a little weird when your close high school friends start getting pregnant.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan! \o/

6. What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
Job stability. And a million bucks while I'm making crazy wishes.

7. What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
6th of August. Said goodbye to a lot of great colleagues that day.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Excluding my work-related 'accomplishments'... jeez, there's not much I'm super proud of. Managing to complete two levels of Super Hexagon?

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not finding new work.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not that I can recall. I have some vague notion of having a cold at some point.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Sony PCM D-50 portable recorder. Kicks the pants off my old Zoom H4 portable recorder. Got it just before it went out of production too for an awesome price~!

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
agentlerain!  She kept her word, and actually came to visit after years of threatening!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
A couple of people from work. Most are awesome, but there's always a couple of guys whose faces you just want to punch in.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Travelling.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Ni No Kuni and FF13-2. GAMES, BASICALLY.

16. What song will always remind you of 2012?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder - I'm not actually sure. On a micro-basis, I think I'm happier. On a macro-basis, not so much.
Older or wiser – Older.
Thinner or fatter – About the same. Put on some weight earlier in the year, have lost some while travelling somehow despite all the cake.
Richer or poorer? – Poorer, although spending it well. Unemployment does that.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Original fic writing. Also more work on my portfolio. Your resume, kids, keep it shiny.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Random internet/Reddit/fanfic reading/other internet time sinkholes. There are too many ways for me to procrastinate.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
This is past tense now. I was in Tokyo, so went out first thing to buy the traditional Japanese Christmas approach of Christmas cake and fried chicken. Then wandered Yodobashi Camera and bought myself the Kill La Kill soundtrack as a Christmas present to myself. Wandered Akihabara for a bit more before returning to the apartment to Skype friends and family, then spent the rest of the day reading fanfic and playing Phoenix Wright. Pretty good day overall!

21. Did you fall in love in 2013?
No. Don't think it's happening any time soon.

22. How many one-night stands?
None. I should really excise these questions from this meme.

23. What was your favourite TV program?
Tough choice! Kill La Kill maybe, Attack on Titan is a close second.

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
No. Well, except for faceless strangers, but that's a fairly abstract hate.

25. What was the best book you read?
Catch-22. Didn't really expect to like it, but it's kind of like a literary version of MASH.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Not exactly a discovery, per se, but definitely the rest of Jin's Kagerou Project.
Personal standout favourites include
Outer Science

Honourable mention goes to 7-bit Hero. BEEEEEEEZ!

27. What did you want and get?
I wanted to go to PAX and I did! Best last-minute decision ever.

28. What did you want and not get?
I wanted a new job and did not get one. :(

29. What was your favourite film of this year?
Another tough one! Maybe Gravity, maybe Pacific Rim, maybe Red 2, maybe Star Trek: Into Darkness.

30. What was your least favorite film of this year?
Monsters University. Pixar's losing their touch. (Also I was pretty good at picking movies this year? Didn't stumble across many outright duds).

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
On my birthday I went to Odaiba, walked around a lot, played some arcade games, and checked out the Capcom store and Giant Gundam. Later on I had epic parfait at Milky Way in Ikebukuro. The friend I was hanging out with completely forgot it was my birthday (understandable, given all going on) and left me in the awkward position of wondering if I should remind them or not.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
If, just for once, I could have taken holidays instead of unemployment.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
I don't really do fashion. Although lately I have noticed that my wardrobe is getting damn near grayscale. I blame Melbourne.

34. What kept you sane?
Having something to look forward to. When you don't have something to look forward, plan something.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hrm... going to be boring and say Robert Downey Jr. again. Although Karl Urban is a close second. I am not entirely sure if that's because of the actors or because of the characters they play.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Everything political stirs me up right now, let's not tread down that spiky path.

37. Who did you miss?
Right now? Kind of almost everyone.

38. Who was the best new person you met?
Oh man, do people I sorta already knew from online count? gardensgnome and dokuganria both were super cool in person! Jeez, if I stretch my memory back even further I also met a heap of really neat people in Perth earlier this year, not sure if I could play favourites.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012:
Never take anything for granted. Everything is transient.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
We'll sneak out while they sleep
And sail off in the night.
We'll come clean and start over the rest of our lives.
When we're gone we'll stay gone.
Out of sight, out of mind.
It's not too late,
We have the rest of our lives.

IT'S SUPER CREEPY. Heh, in my case it's a little surprising it hasn't happened more often. It's kind of terrifying though to realise these people you used to hang out with are about to become parents, especially when you know what they were like in high school. These people are about to become responsible for another human being, jeeeez.

I feel terrible for giggling at the peers having babies thing bc when I was in high school, one of my closest friends actually had a baby, which is why she worked to graduate a semester early. ^^;; That and both my siblings had kids before they were my age, so I don't really feel awkward on that front either even if them being 13 and 9 years older is cheating but minor details.

For me, it's the getting married thing, tbh. Mostly because both my bfs were/are long distance ones so. XP

LOL, well there have certainly been plenty of other classmates who had kids in their teens/before now, but this was the first of my close friends to so it was something crazy to wrap my head around. But hear you on the weddings thing too, it's a bit mind-blowing sometimes!

Just people making changes in their lives, a reminder that things keep moving on I guess.
