Cosplay Master Post

Since I am far too fail casual about cosplay to get a DeviantArt, I thought the next best thing would be to make a master post for it, not unlike a fic masterlist.  Then I can just update it with new cosplays as they come along.

I'll put up a couple of pics, a reference image for people who have no idea who the character is, and later I might make a couple of making-of posts if anyone's interested, since I usually take a bunch of in-progress shots which never actually make it onto the net. (Caveat: I am not even remotely pro so don't be using them as any kind of tutorial!)

I'm doing this in reverse order to hide all the super embarrassing cosplays down the bottom.  (Although there are some pretty embarrassing ones in the fairly recent past too XD)

(Also, I've tried to mostly use my own photos but I'm pretty disorganised so if I inadvertently stole one please let me know.)

The White Witch Cassiopeia, Ni No Kuni, Brisbane Supanova 2013

Things to do better next time: Make sure wrinkled fabric is washed and ironed before trying to work with it. Also double check I have my damn spirit gum and don't have to rely on sock glue for elf ears. And to avoid anything with greasepaint when there's risk of it rubbing against white fabric (you think I would have learned this from Zelgadis.) Also, eyelets - not great for anything that's going to take much strain. And to never ever every try to paint anything on spandex again, it takes forever. Also, glass paint, remember to seal it with gloss or something because it gets damaged very easily (another thing I should have learned from Zelgadis.)

Rydia of the Mist, Final Fantasy IV, Brisbane Supanova 2013

Things to be better next time: I could say a lot about this one. Most of the problems related to a lack of time and a lack of funds though - using higher quality, more expensive material guys, it pays off. I suppose the biggest thing for this one then would be footwear. Stilettos are damn uncomfortable, even more so when they've been converted into boot-leg-chaps hybrids. In the future, when uncertain about footwear spend a couple of days practicing beforehand. Not only will you walk more confidently, your feet will be more used to it.

Zelgadis Greywords, Slayers, SMASH 2013

Zelgadis Cosplay

Zelgadis Cosplay Smash

Things to do better next time: Remember shoulder pads, especially when cross-playing. Get someone more talented to do the wig when it's something impossible like this one. I'd like to say 'avoid coloured makeup with a white costume' but I did actually see that one coming and took reasonably effective measures against it that worked about as well as can be expected.

Caius Ballad, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Wai-Con 2013

In progress post

Things to do better next time:  Time management, really. Learning not to bite off more than I chew.  All of my problems on this cosplay were completely related to time.  Also:  never to underestimate the power of staples/safety pins!

Journey, Supanova Brisbane 2012

In progress post 1

In progress post 2

Things to learn to do better next time:  Better prep to avoid fraying. Trust my instincts on how something should look more so than a tutorial.  Conversely, look up as many tutorials as possible, it saves so much time in the long run!  And however much fabric you think you have, it is never enough.  Always have at LEAST a spare metre for mistakes.

Kain Highwind (Final Fantasy IV, Dissidia Duodecim version) Manifest 2012

In progress post 1 (helmet)

In progress post 2

Things to learn to do better next time: Test wear.  Make sure that I can actually sit down without breaking things, because I will definitely want to sit down.  However well pinned back/pinned down your wig/costume is, IT IS NOT PINNED DOWN ENOUGH.  ADD MORE.  Also, pay more attention to movement in joints.  It might be accurate, but not being able to move properly leads to breakages and discomfort.

Riesz (Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2) Melbourne Supanova 2012

In progress post.

Things to learn to do better next time: Lining costume to avoid all the fraying.  Also how to avoid bubbles in the varnish.  How to make shoes sturdier.  To never forget the sock glue.

Kunsel (FF7: Crisis Core) Brisbane Supanova 2011

I kid you not this was best my reference image.

Things to learn to do better next time: How to do better chest binding, and how to make things look more metal and weathered.  Also, to bring a prop if possible, makes posing easier.

Mitsuru Kirijo (Persona 3) Brisbane Supanova 2011

This one was not very accurate (the shirt particularly), but I also spent very little time and money on it so I guess that's the trade off.

Things to learn to do better next time: Dye fabric, or better yet, just get the right damn fabric in the first place.  How to better apply makeup and false eyelashes.

Sakura (Gate 7) Manifest 2011

In-progress post.

Things to learn to do better next time: Proper chest-binding is imperative even in loose clothes.  How to avoid natural hair showing around the ears.  FABRIC PAINT MEDIUMS.

ShinRa Trooper/Crisis Core Cloud Strife (FF7: Crisis Core) Sydney SMASH! 2011

Someone took this stalker shot while I was taking a time out to repair my knee guard and checking out the convention guide, but I liked it.  The wall looks very ShinRa-compound.

Things to learn to do better next time:  To hotglue everything twice, even if it seems sturdy.

Hiiragi (Natsume Yuujinchou) Manifest 2010

Things to learn to do better next time: Wearing a kimono properly.  Importance of ironing cosplay before wearing.

Celty Sturluson (Durarara!) Manifest 2010

Celty is sad face because she can't eat.

Things to learn to do better next time: Find ways to make headwear not so heavy.  Get better at the whole posing thing.  (2012 note: Still no good at that.)

Integra Hellsing (Hellsing) Amaranth 2010

Okay, we're getting to that point where I don't want to be looking at these cosplays anymoooooore....

Things to learn to do next time: Never ever go without a wig cap.  Or makeup.

Tezuka Kunimitsu (Prince of Tennis) Wai-Con 2010

Things to learn to do better next time:  Things in a mirror are reversed, dammit.  Also, styling wigs is hard.

Kati Mannequin (Gundam 00 Season 2) Wai-Con 2010

Things to learn to do better next time:  Always carry safety pins.  Preferably dozens.  And have a reference pic handy when styling hair.  In fact, don't use real hair, use a wig.  Unless you already have awesome, easily styled hair, which I don't.

Yukiko Amagi (Persona 4) Gen Con 2009

Yeeaaaaah, I was cosplaying Persona 4 (badly) before it was cool.  #cosplayhipster

Things to learn to do better next time: Buy quality wigs, and pin them until your head feels like a hedgehog.

Lenalee Lee (D. Gray-Man) Brisbane Supanova 2009

I feel bad including this at all since the whole thing was store bought, the jacket fit badly, and it was waaaaay too hot so I only wore it for an hour while standing in line before going to get changed.  I'm pretty sure this is the only photo in existence (thank goodness).

Things to learn to do better next time:  Take the weather into consideration when choosing cosplay.

Nothing wrong with store bought costumes. :D
And I think your cosplays look awesome!!!! Half the reason why some of the cosplayers look awesome on da is cause the photos are taken very professional looking. hahaha.

Love seeing lists like this! :D

Thanks! I look back and see a lot of fail, but I'm gratified to also see gradual improvement. I learned something on each one.

Hahaha, so that's the secret is it? I ought to be leveraging P-chan's pro photography skills to make them look better. Pretty sure there's more to it than that but I'll take it!

Did you go to MelbNova? Did you cosplay? :D I haven't seen any cosplay pics from you lately!
Apr. 19th, 2012 02:37 pm (UTC)
That's good to hear!! As long as you're improving, the past isn't something bad to look back at. :D

And I believe it is. :D Nothing a good photograph can't do to make things better. It's like how some of the simplest cosplays can look so awesome. I mean... surely it's got to do with the photo.

Yea I did go but only on sunday!!! I was so upset when I heard you went back on sunday....D: I cosplayed a random Harry Potter gryffindor student. hahaha. Was very lazy coming up to supanova to actually make something cause everyone was already in groups. but I have been cosplaying a couple of other things for shoots so maybe you'll see some photos soon. :D

Yes, sadly I had to go back for work on Monday. :( Sorry to have missed you too! I half expected to see you at the Eminence gig on the Thursday. Oh well, looking forward to pics!

ALL your cosplays look awesome!!! :DDDDD

and I like how you keep notes at the bottom to remind yourself about the little things to make a con day better without wardrobe malfunctions

Thanks, but none hold a candle to Minty Fresh! XD

All lessons learned the hard way.
Apr. 21st, 2012 04:43 am (UTC)
Am happy to say I have seen all these photos before, hehe! Also I spot some of my work there too, and heeee, look you do have a few group cosplays! ♥ WAIT UNTIL EVERYONE SEEING THE EPIC YOU'LL BE ADDING TO THIS ALREADY PRO LIST. You have such good choice in characters too! Mainly ones that not everyone sees, so whoever does recognise you gets a kick. ♥
Apr. 21st, 2012 10:47 am (UTC)
XD Thank you for excellent photos. When can we expect to see some of your Melbourne ones? *__*

<3 You're officially the only person I've ever actually group cosplayed with, you realise? (Aside from that one big PoT group at the Aus Open.)

Hahaha, Celty makes up for all of my obscure ones. I have to admit though, I get a kick out of finding other fans through it too. And you're hardly one to talk! Juvia, Hana... although you did Mio too. Actually, I want to see you make a kind of post like this! (Or do you already have one somewhere? *__*)

Apr. 22nd, 2012 10:44 am (UTC)
It's really awesome to see you continuously challenging yourself! It's actually pretty obvious that your costumes are getting more and more epic ;)

I think everyone goes through that thing where they cringe when they look at their past cosplays. I actually can't even look at my cosplays from 2 years ago without cringing. The fact that you feel that way just shows that you're getting better though! :)
Apr. 22nd, 2012 11:20 am (UTC)
LOL, thank you. Sometimes cosplay feels like an arms race, seriously. There's this innate need to try and top yourself each time. XD Or maybe it's just as you get more experience you stop writing off the more complicated costumes as 'too hard' and so inevitably start tackling more ambitious ones.

Heh, and yet I still think a lot of your cosplays from even 2 years ago are superb. I guess it's like any creative endeavour though - old art, old writing, old cosplays - all this evidence that you were once a n00b!

I kind of like looking back at the old stuff though, as embarrassing as it can be. Sort of proof that hey, there has been at least some improvement.
Apr. 24th, 2012 10:33 am (UTC)
You look amazing!

I actually really like the stalker shot; looks like Cloud's chillin'.
Apr. 25th, 2012 01:38 am (UTC)

It is a really good photo. Kind of impressive for a ninja shot!

*___* Amazing! I like your little costume-maker notes -- I'll be sure to refer back to this if I ever plan on cosplaying again. :P I'm looking forward to your updates to this list!
Oct. 26th, 2012 10:46 pm (UTC)
Very nice list. Particularly like your Kati, which I think looks fine with your own hair but totally agree on the using a wig thing. Makes for one less thing to fuss over because it's already styled. And Cloud is just awesome while Kunsel makes me grin like a loon.

And I should have recognized some of the backgrounds for pics too as I've attended Manifest a couple times. Didn't click that you're a local gal until I looked at where the pics were taken ^^; I'm so very unobservant.
Oct. 27th, 2012 03:57 pm (UTC)
Thanks! Heh, this picture didn't show it but by the end of the day the hair wasn't holding up so well - another tally mark in favor of the wig column! Haven't used my natural hair since.

Oh neat, another local! Hi! (Well, somewhat local... I don't actually live in Melbourne, I just hop around the country for cons.)
Oct. 27th, 2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
I think I used my own hair for two cosplays...both of which required straight hair that I don't have -_- Straighteners can only do so much and by the end of the day it wasn't as straight as it should have been :D

Heh I'm more local than that. I'm up inland of Noosa. Manifest is the only Aussie con I've attended so far.
Oct. 28th, 2012 07:06 am (UTC)
LOL, that is indeed much more local! All the way to Manifest but not the much closer Supanova? XD
