Anyone else wondering if the sudden flurry of changes on Fanfiction.net is in response to Ao3's surge in popularity?

(I'm pretty sure Avengers fandom can take partial credit.)

All day long I've had fanfics updated with the 'AntiPurge' meme going around. /faceplant

It's great that so many writers are trying to change things, but seriously? This is just going to make FFdotnet think that they're becoming even more popular.

I've been getting those too. No clue what's going on besides what's in the petition letter. Kinda confusing and off putting; shouldn't FFN if they're really serious about that give the authors notice, then a week to fix before taking it down if it's still in violation?

Same, I wasn't even referring to the AntiPurge thing. Is this related to the notice they posted on the front page reminding everybody about their ratings policy? That's surely not a surprise anymore is it? They got rid of NC-17 way back in 2002, and R disappeared sometime in 2004-2005 I think. Keeping things clean for the advertisers... Though it's been fairly poorly enforced. It's pretty much only the extreme stuff that gets booted.

I'm not a fanfiction reader, so when I looked at FF.net just now I couldn't tell what has changed. What's up? :O

Also, what is ao3? I have a feeling I should already know, lol.

archiveofourown.org , a pretty nice but overstressed fanfic repository. Best accomplishment is hosting the decade-old fic archives as they shut down.

They added image support, made the max summary length longer, and also included the story information at the top of chapters, and locked scalability (presumably to prevent breaking the pictures) and are adding a notes feature soon too. Nothing really that huge but FFnet tends to move like a dinosaur when it comes to changing anything so the sudden flurry of updates made me raise an eyebrow. This is more action in two weeks than the site normally sees in two years.

And yes, Ao3 (archiveofourown) is basically a fan-run version of FFnet that's been fairly steadily gaining in popularity. It's not as polished as FFnet is (nor as stable, servers often get overloaded) but it's a lot more flexible and has a laundry list of features people have been begging FFnet for for years.

Apart from the purging group - which has been making news on Tumblr - I've been totally out of the loop (haven't been properly on LJ for a while!) but wow I agree, that's a lot of improvements! It might be time for me to start posting stuff there again. Maybe? xD;

I prefer AO3 because you can search by pairing and then by popularity, but for some fandoms it seems that most/all the authors stick with FFnet (ex. FFVII), so I trek over there at times when I'm feeling in the mood for something more old school, haha. But yeah, throughout the years, you could count on FFnet staying pretty much the same, so I agree with your conspiracy theory/marketing strategy!

XD It's very suspicious isn't it? I credit Avengers because that's a fandom that is going ballistic on Ao3 and is conspicuously quiet on FFnet.

I think you're right though, older fandoms stick to older sites. It's hard to move a fandom when it's made its home base. So it's not like FFnet is going anywhere. Though I'm secretly hoping this will at least get us a way to search by hits or reviews on FFnet eventually. I wonder why so much resistance?

Whoa I only just recently popped into FFnet to check something and I was pleasantly surprised with the changes. Didn't realise there were so many changes (that I liked) in a short amount of time !

p.s. grats on the Hell Sanctuary True Ending in Cave Story+ holy crap *__*

I know right? First time in ages where the changes have actually been a pleasant surprise.

Heh, thanks! I'm irrationally proud.
