Supanova 2010

I'm absolutely wrecked.  Sorry guys, I won't be able to make a Fifth Act update today, I had a look to see how much work the chapter still needed earlier and I found two enormous inconsistencies and about a million typos, which has made me paranoid and I'm really not in the mental condition to pick over it with the necessary fine-tooth comb.  But in consolation, here's a rather hastily thrown-together con report from Supanova! :D

I only got to go on the Saturday, as there were familial obligations on Sunday I could not gracefully wriggle out of after my blissfully family-free Easter.  :(  I pretty much cleaned up all the merch I was interested in on Saturday anyway - brought home a nice haul of old and relatively cheap Geneon-released soundtracks from Transreality.  *__*  And Supanova doesn't have heaps of things to do anyway, so one day is enough unless you're cosplaying, or spending most of your day standing in line to see a guest.  In fact, the more I think about it, the more I realise the primary activity at Supanova is standing in line.

Anyhow, pictures!  Cosplay!  That was the entire reason I went!  My cosplay photo-fu has become weak, so I didn't get as many photos as normal.  And a lot of them came out too blurry to really post, but here's a selection.  Cosplay attendance was down a little on last year - I think a portion of the anime audience has been driven off, a lot more of the cosplays were TV show and comic book related.  Or maybe they were slain by the heat.  But one fandom that turned up in unusually high numbers was Sailor Moon, of all things.  I saw at least three different Princess Serenities!

Plus Sailor Saturn!  She made the boots herself!  :O  Her glaive was also incredibly awesome, made of wood and surprisingly sturdy!

alsfkjaslkjf Incredible Ciel Phantomhive!  There was a rather spiffy Sebastian running around I kept missing, hopefully they met up!

Lucky Star crew.

Suzaku from Code Geass!

And not far away, his nemesis!  FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT.

Quick stealth photo of Madam Red!  I didn't manage to track her down to get a proper one.  :(  But I like this photo, because the almost-Sasuke kid in the foreground cracks me up.

Speaking of Sasuke, I posted this one entirely for you, kaorismash, for the great purple rope.  The lighting was really weird inside, ruined a bunch of photos! :(

Why so cold and unfeeling, Sephiroth?  XD

I'm impressed this lasted the day!  I guess the Sith cosplayers stayed home this year.

To give you an idea of the crowds, this was where people went outside to catch a breather.  Apparently Brisbane's Supanova is now the largest in the country?  :O  WHEN AND HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?  Perhaps it's the lack of competitive events.

Karl Urban was there!  I only got to glimpse him from a distance, for you see, this Rubik's cube girl was part of the line to go see him.  You see in the background behind her?  That is also the line.  And that's outside the building.  I had to choose between waiting in line and going to see the cosplay national championship entrants.  I decided I love cosplay more than Karl Urban.

Not sure where these two are from, but kind of amazing!

I did say there were a lot of Sailor Moon cosplayers!  Eternal editions!

C.C. from Code Geass!  Complete with creepy coloured contacts.  *__*

dlsakjfaslkfjsklafj SNOW VILLIERS FROM FFXIII!!!  \o/  This guy was one of the entrants in the national cosplay championship.  But the most amazing part - HE MADE THE SHIVACYCLE!  THE SHIVACYCLE!  (Plus a Serah doll XD)

Apparently it took him 13 days.  XD  I'm not entirely certain if that was true or a clever reference.  Unbelievably, this only netted him 2nd place.  But he was hilarious.  There was a Stig in the audience, and John (MC) pulled him up for a test drive.  XD

More of the amazing Sailor Moon group!  This has to be the first time I've seen the entire group.  *___*  As John pointed out, it was like collecting the figures, then realising you had the full set.

Blurry Genesis photo!  Wasn't that great, honestly, maybe better that's blurry.  I fangirled all the same.  There was a rather short Zack running around too!  Kept missing him for photos.

Subaru from .hack//SIGN!  Best one I've ever seen!

Epic Gurren Lagaan group!

Black Cat crew!

This is the full group of national championship entrants.  Snow, stop flirting with Sakura!  What will crystal Serah think?!  :O  The winner was Fai D. Flowright in the center.  She actually had a costume change mid-skit!

Pokemon!  It's more than just brave to wear a suit like this at this con.  It was really very hot and humid, made only worse with the huge crowds inside.  People fainted, so there were some rather frequent reminders during the comp and over the PA speakers for people to remember to stay hydrated.  Brisbane conventions are dangerous.  XD

Alien and Noot!  They had an absolutely brilliant suspense skit, which they then stuffed up at the last second, but that somehow made it even better.  XD

Some of the best cosplays were outside the comp, though!  Beauty and the Beast!  I couldn't get over that dress!

Awesome Grell!  I probably should have grouped the Kuroshitsuji cosplays together.  They were all rather impressive!

One last one!  Misato Katsuragi playing Guitar Hero ftw!

Then I spent a good 45 minutes wandering the convention floor looking for my wayward friends who I'd lost early in the day, only to discover they had ditched me and gone home without even telling me.  Not so much as an SMS!  Thanks guys!  I desperately need to find new con-going friends for Brisbane events.

I WILL GO WITH YOU TO CONS. (I'm starting to see a trend in me saying these things.)

SO MUCH EPIC HERE THAT I'M FLAILING IN MY SEAT FROM THE FUN OF IT ALL! The nationals! I am wondering if the two with their heads turned are people I've seen before. The best normally go from con to con.. Very good standards for the Kuroshitsuji people! SHIVACYCLE= DEDICATION. And STILL FLAILING OVER THE TENGEN TOPPA GURREN LAGAAN DAN. >:D But they didn't have a young!Simon. SIN, HAVE YOU WATCHED IT PROPERLY YET?

Ho-ou is very amazing too. :| It looks like cloth or some furry feathers? Doesn't even look like a hole to breath from! How hot was it that day anyway?
Apr. 11th, 2010 08:54 am (UTC)
\o/ WE WILL HAVE AN AWESOME TIME AT A VARIETY OF CONS. In the meantime, I guess I'll just have to go on my own. More fun than going with people who'll be a drag!

What? What are you saying? I've watched all of Gurren Lagaan thank you very much! XD It must have been some time ago since we last discussed it.

I think it was only about 32 outside, but it was definitely worse in the auditorium and general con floor. Humidity makes a big difference too, you sweat a lot more, making dehydration the big risk. I'm assuming that's what happened to the folks who fainted.

It's HUGE compared to Animania which ran the same day over here in Melbourne xDD;; I second what you said about some of the best cosplays not entering competitions~ Sometimes you just find them wandering around and they are epic and *___* <3

I can't wait for Supanova next week *________* It's going to be so much fun~

PS. Massive Sailor Moon group is AMAZING~ \o/
Apr. 11th, 2010 08:57 am (UTC)
*__* We have Animania here as well in a couple of weeks, I'll probably go check that out too. I guess some of them prefer to do it for the joy rather than let the competitive aspect interfere.

Be sure to post pics of your Supanova! It sounds like it's going to be great!

KJASGJKASD I ACTUALLY THOUGHT THAT THE SEPH-MANNEQUIN WAS A COSPLAYER. :/ I fangirled like crazy until I got a closer view of the picture and went "...Oh. It's just a mannequin. D'8"
Apr. 12th, 2010 10:07 am (UTC)
IT'S A TRAP! While you're busy fangirling over it, REAL Sephiroth drops from the ceiling and impales you on Masamune! 8D

The Belle ball gown is pretty amazing. And Alien OTL Last Manifest we had a full Sailor Moon team too, and a kid dressed as Tuxedo Kamen, so cute =3

...I think I need to go to Australia. You guys throw awesome cons. aslfkdjg KARL URBAN!! WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DIDN'T GO SEE HIM?!
Apr. 12th, 2010 11:13 am (UTC)
Grass is greener on the other side. ;)

Apr. 11th, 2010 07:26 pm (UTC)
FFXIII cosplayers already! That's pretty awesome. Pic hasn't loaded for the Shiva-cycle -- will check again after I post this comment!

Sometimes, yeah, going 1 day to see the cosplayers and buy some merch is better than wasting 3 days standing in lines. Somehow though, I always end up going 2, 3 days...
Apr. 12th, 2010 10:21 am (UTC)
Ha ha, they've been around for a while! I saw a Lightning as early as January! And the Noctis cosplayers are already turning up too. That game doesn't even have a release date yet!

Yeah, even if I went both days I still don't think I could bring myself to stand in line that much. There are not many things I will stand in line in the hot sun that long for. But multiple days means you can wear/see more cosplays! :D
Apr. 11th, 2010 09:34 pm (UTC)
The one cosplayer in the red outfit that you didn't know, I'm pretty sure is Hoshina Utau from Shugo Chara in her Lunatic Charm form. It's kinda complicated, but basically she has these little alter egos, called Il and El, and when she combines with Il, she turns into a devilish figure, and with El, she's an angel figure called Seraphic Charm. It's a very cute series, which just ended the other week (T_T), so if you don't mind stuff initially aimed for younger children, it's a good pick.
Apr. 12th, 2010 10:24 am (UTC)
Really? :O Other people said was Altoli from .hack//GU. I'll have to do a google image search later. Whatever it was, it was epic!
Apr. 11th, 2010 10:12 pm (UTC)
Love love love!! Ahh I only recognize two of my friends who traveled up from Sydney in the photos (the FFXIII Snow and the massive dress Sakura) but all the cosplays you captured were pretty cool in general. <3 Looks like so much fun! Did you cosplay?? ;DD
Apr. 12th, 2010 10:29 am (UTC)
*___* Snow and massive dress Sakura were all kinds of amazing, you have very epic friends! Did more of your crew come up to Brisbane? I shouldn't be so surprised, a lot of the best cosplayers travel around! Lucky for us, because then we get to see their lovely work in person~!

Hee, no, Supanova kind of snuck up on me this year, I couldn't get my planned costume finished in time, and it was too hot to recycle any of the old ones. :( alskfjalskjf, at this rate I won't even be ready for mini-Animania!
Apr. 12th, 2010 06:26 am (UTC)
woahhhh, the heat would def make cosplays hard to pull off o_O

but Impressed nevertheless!!!

Not sure guy to the right is Haseo from .Hack//G.U.

I... I'm not sure whether to be awed at the Snow for making the cycle or freaked out because of the doll.
Apr. 18th, 2010 12:13 pm (UTC)
No? :S I haven't played the game, only seen Hack Roots the anime, the collar and the belt buckles reminded me of this:
So I kind of figured maybe the game version had a slightly different variation on this outfit? Or he might be abdomen shy. A MYSTERY.

Also, you seem like an awesome person (you also play DJ Max Technika! asdfjsflkj) so I have friended you back, hope you don't mind. ^_^
